Contains letters from John Carlyle to his brother George Carlyle in England discussing family news, business transactions, and rising tensions between the British and the French on the frontier. Includes references to George Washington, Lawrence Washington and General Edward Braddock. Also discusses the murder of fellow Scotsman, Robert Routlidge by John Chiswell, son-in-law of Colonel William Randolph of Turkey Island. Also contains letters from mother Rachel Murray Carlyle and daughter Sarah (Carlyle) Herbert, as well as a page from the Carlyle family Bible and an indenture for nephew John Carlyle.
